Tantan noodles

What did I get myself into? What could be going through my mind that made me order this HOT and SPICY bowl of tantan noodles? I must have got up on the wrong side of my bed today.

Tanyoto apparently is one of the more famous hotpot restaurants from China.  My friend’s Chinese wife told me they originated from Shanghai, in fact right across the street from where she lived in SH, there is always a line outside the restaurant.

Like all authentic or historical Chinese restaurants in China, you find an official Chinese government issued certificate with 2 or 3 stars hung over its entrance, which kind of reminded me of my trips to China some years back when I first discovered this unique rating system and ever since I’ve been looking out for these stars in Chinese restaurants I visited. Interestingly so far I have never gone wrong with this rating for good food from communist China.

Even though I loved all the dishes I ordered and I don’t mind some hot and spicy food from time to time but this is indeed an ultimate test on my threshold for everything hot numbing and fiery. Maybe it is becos I’ve not had Sichuan hotpot for a while, maybe I was just feeling mischevious, maybe I just needed to get “burned”…haha.

For people who love hot numb spiciness, this is a place to go, a place with the right accolades to prove its credentials, these days there are many hotpot places in Bugis and Geylang, so competition can be fierce - in close tandem to the fiery food perhaps.
I did not order the hotpot buffet lunch ($23.80++) but it must be good, becos once you walked into the restaurant, you can easily pick up the aromatics brewing in hotpots around you.
Tanyoto uses its own distinct blend of spices in its soup and bases, they even manage their own fish farm in China where all their ingredients supposedly come from.  They are part of a large conglomerate in China – well there are many mouths to feed and please in China, so they must have their own way of managing a food empire.
And I also realized the icy cool jelly is a great way to beat the heat.  I highly recommend it as a cure for any hot numbing hangover.  Maybe it’s one of those unique Chinese cures that really works.  Even though I was drenched in my perspiration from my food but I definitely wouldn’t mind coming back for the hotpot another day.  Another day when I wake up on the wrong side of bed.
