K.L – foodie’s paradise?

The Best Rice Roll (Chee Cheong Fun)

The Best Rice Roll (Chee Cheong Fun)

It’s official.  Not only do K.Lites have the right to make fun of the Singapore’s version of ketchup wantan mee, for the record, I want to make it known that K.Lites also have better and more fun not unlike us but, the fun I am referring to is actually Cheong fun or steamed rice rolls.  I knew I had to try the staple K.L street breakfast on this trip.

K.Lites love their porridge, yu-sheng and cheong fun in the morning.  I started with the cheong fun and what a pleasant surprise!  The texture of the K.L fun is chewy with a slight stickiness but not overdone.  Served with a sweet soy bean sauce, the mouth-feel is one that I will remember for a long time.  Even the bean sauce is milder and not as sharp.  It is just a great feeling to chew on this little chunks of rice rolls as it bounces off with every bite.

Cheong fun can be served with Yong Tou Foo also in K.L and is something highly recommended for those who had never had it before.  Again the dressing is heavely!  Not forgetting the chewy rice rolls.

I had this cheong fun YTF at a coffeeshop along the side street of the Petaling market on the same row as Jin Lian Ji.  I’ve had better ones before but this is still a good place to try the K.L all essential breakfast.

Wang Jin Liang Ji coffeeshop is a necessary stop in Petaling street if you want to re-live some of the “old school” food served in traditional coffeeshops of an era long gone from Singapore.

Morning they serve breakfast items, porridge, yusheng and cheong fun.  Expect 10mins wait on busy days.  But take your pick, there are quite a few stall along that street that serves the typical K.L breakfast.
There’s more to this unpretentious coffeeshop than meet the eyes.  During the day, they serve simple typical breakfast, by 5pm it is a toally different animal.
